  Graduate Admissions

Laurentian University offers a unique experience to graduates, including the opportunity to work with leading academics and researchers.

To be admitted, students should normally hold an appropriate bachelor's degree at the Honours level, or its equivalent, with at least second class standing (70% average of all courses)*. Students with a general degree will need to complete a full qualifying year beyond the general degree before being considered. To enter a qualifying year, students should have at least a second-class standing in their major subject. Successful completion of courses during a qualifying year does not ensure automatic admission to a graduate program, nor does meeting minimum requirements.

  * Individual departments may require a higher average.

  Biology (M.Sc.)

Students entering the Biology M.Sc. Program normally have a 4-year degree or equivalent in Biology; however, in special circumstances, students from chemistry, biochemistry, earth sciences, neuroscience, and psychology have been accepted, provided that their thesis topic fits their past academic experience.

  Business Administration (MBA)

4-year undergraduate degree from a recognized university or equivalent and a score on the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT). The combination of GPA and GMAT score must correspond to the table below*

International applicants must meet the minimum Laurentian University language requirements .

GPA Laurentian GPA GMAT Score
High C (65%) 4.5 - 4.6 600 or more
C+ (66-69%) 4.7 - 5.4 575 or more
B (70-74%) 5.5 - 6.4 550 or more
B+ (75-79%) 6.5 - 7.4 525 or more
A (80%) 7.5 or over 500 or more

*Applicants with significant intermediate level work experience may apply without a GMAT and will be required to request a waiver with their application package.

  Chemical Sciences (M.Sc.)

For admission as either full- or part-time graduate students, candidates must submit proof of upper second-class standing (no less than 75%) in the last year of a four-year undergraduate B.Sc. degree in Chemistry or Biochemistry or equivalent. Candidates not possessing the equivalent of a four-year degree should apply to the department of chemistry and biochemistry for special studies to complete the minimum requirements. In all cases where it is difficult to assess candidates, they will be required to write the graduate record examination in advanced chemistry.

  Computational Sciences (M.Sc.)

Admission requirements for the M.Sc. Computational Sciences program are as follows :

Bachelor's degree in a suitable field at the Honors level (or equivalent), with a minimum average grade of 70 % (B average).

Three letters of reference from academic institutions last attended demonstrating the capability to conduct advanced and independent research in an appropriate field.

Statement of Interest explaining research projects or areas that are of potential interest for pursuing thesis in M.Sc.

  Geology (M.Sc.)

M.Sc. in Geology - Thesis-based option (Full time)

Entrance to the MSc. in Geology - Thesis-based option requires a B.Sc. Honours degree with a minimum B average. Note that students in this program cannot transfer into the Mineral exploration one-year option.

M.Sc. in Geology - Mineral exploration one-year option (Full time)

Entrance to the M.Sc. in mineral exploration one-year option is restricted to geoscientists holding a B.Sc. honours degree in the Earth Sciences (minimum B average). Enrolment and residency requirements: students in this option are full-time students.

M.Sc. in Geology - Mineral exploration two-year option (Part time)

Entrance to the M.Sc. in mineral exploration two-year option is restricted to geoscientists holding a B.Sc. honours degree in the Earth Sciences (minimum B average) with at least two years of industry or equivalent experience. Enrolment and residency requirements: part-time.

  History (M.A.)

Applicants should have a B.A. Honours or equivalent in History with a B+ or higher (78%) level of performance over the last two years and within the major. Applicants must also provide undergraduate transcripts.

  Interdisciplinary Health (MA or M.Sc.)

Students accepted into the program typically have an Honours Bachelor Degree in Psychology, Human Kinetics, or Sociology (or a related field) with an overall average of at least B+. Should a student not meet the minimum academic standing, the student has the option of successfully completing a qualifying year in one of the three academic disciplines.

  Human Kinetics (MHK)

To be admitted, students should normally hold an appropriate Bachelor's degree at the honours level, or its equivalent, with at least a B+ or 75% standing in the last three years of a four year degree program.

Students entering the MHK Program will normally hold a 4-year degree in a Human Kinetics Field (e.g., Physical and Health Education; Kinesiology; Sports Psychology) or equivalent. Candidates who have graduated from a three year degree program in a related discipline may be admitted to a qualifying year. Candidates with an honours degree in a related field such as Life Sciences, Sports Administration, Nursing Science, Rehabilitation Therapy, Sociology, Psychology, Physiology, Mechanical Engineering, Biology and Biochemistry to name a few, may be admitted to the MHK program. However, such candidates may be required to enroll in undergraduate courses in the School of Human Kinetics to round out their academic thesis preparation if deemed necessary by the admissions committee (students will be informed of this decision before being admitted to the program).

  Indigenous Relations (M.I.R.)

Students admitted to the program should have an appropriate Honours Bachelor Degree with Indigenous/Aboriginal content, with an average of at least 70%. Should a student not meet the minimum requirements, the student will have the option of completing a qualifying year before being considered, though the qualifying year does not automatically ensure admission into the program.

  Nursing (M.Sc.N.)

  Admission criteria include:

must hold a Baccalaureate degree with a GPA of 75%

licensed as a RN or RNEC with the College of Nurses of Ontario (or equivalent)

if applying for the Advance Practice option, the applicant must have the equivalent of 2 full time years of work experience in a particular domain of nursing practice in the past 5 years.

In addition to this application process, you will be required to submit the following documents to Laurentian University Admissions:

Three Reference Forms (in separate, sealed envelopes).

  Personal Essay.

Curriculum Vitae (include education, work experience, publications or awards and service to the community).

NOTE: THE DEADLINE FOR ALL COMPLETED APPLICATIONS IS FEBRUARY 1 OF EACH YEAR. APPLICATIONS RECEIVED AFTER THIS DEADLINE, OR INCOMPLETE APPLICATONS WILL NOT BE REVIEWED.

  Physics (M.Sc.)

For admission into the program, students require an honours degree (or equivalent) in physics. Applicants who have an honours degree (or equivalent) in an appropriately related science or engineering area can be admitted directly into the program but may be required to complete a few extra courses at the undergraduate level. Completion of a qualifying year will be required for students having only a general degree.

  Sociology (M.A.)

Candidates must have a Sociology Honours degree or equivalent social science degree with an average of at least 75% (or B+). Since the focus of the program is on applied social research, candidates should have a sound background in sociological research methodology and statistics. Those with an academic background other than sociology will have their qualifications examined and may be required to complete additional course work or a qualifying year. In addition to their grades, candidates are required to submit letters of reference, a statement of research interest, and the supervisor form filled out and signed by a potential supervisor.

Letters of reference must be obtained from three professors, preferably those who are most familiar with the candidate's work. The statement of research interest should be a maximum of two pages, double-spaced (i.e., 500 words), and clearly identify the candidate's intended research field/project/interests. In preparing their application, a prospective student is also required to identify a potential supervisor and have a supervisor in place at the time of application. Candidates are encouraged to consult with the Department of Sociology faculty and/or MA Program coordinator.

All applications are reviewed by the MA Program committee to ensure that all applicants meet the minimum admission criteria and the needs of the department are best fulfilled. The general regulations of the School of graduate studies will apply unless otherwise stated.

  Language Requirements

For admission to a degree program, a student must meet one of the language requirements listed below in addition to the academic requirements:

  Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) (minimum score: 230 computer-based, 570 paper-based, 88 Internet-based)
